The health status of a child influences his/her ability to learn. The main focus of the school health service is to maintain, improve and promote the health and safety of the students. Ms. Self, a professional nurse, is assigned to Ruskin High School. Ms. Self assists children in acquiring knowledge and developing attitudes conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Ms. Self plans and implements services to assess students' health and to deliver appropriate nursing care.

These services include, but are not limited to:

1. First aid for ill or injured students and staff members.
2. Health counseling to students, parents and school personnel.
3. Health promotion programs to designated grade levels. It is suggested that parents contact their school nurse if they have questions or concerns about their child's health that may be adversely affected in the school environment.

Medication Policy
Hickman Mills C-1 School District's health service is dedicated to providing the best possible service to our students. In order to protect students from error in medication, it is necessary to maintain some rules and guidelines. We appreciate the cooperation of parents and guardians in helping us ensure the safety of their children by abiding by these guidelines:
1. Medication will be kept in the school health room office, never in the classroom.
2. It will be dispensed only by the School Nurse or her trained designee under the following guidelines. All medications MUST be in the originally dispensed bottle with appropriate labeling. Your pharmacist can supply a school bottle if necessary.
3. Prescription medications will be given, including prescription eye, ear, and nose drops, with written parental consent.
4. Tylenol and other nonprescription medications shall be dispensed only with written parental consent.
5. Throat lozenges/cough drops may be used with written parental consent and approval of the school nurse.
6. Medication not within recommended dosage in the Physicians Desk Reference will not be given without a physician's order.
7. Medication for relief of minor discomforts and first aid treatments will be administered according to the Standing Orders listed in the health services handbook. A copy of these orders is available on request.

Medication Procedures

1. Permission forms are available at each school and must be completed by a parent/guardian before medication will be given. NO medication will be given without this information.

2. In elementary, all medication shall be delivered to and from school by the parent or another designated adult. In secondary, all medication must be delivered to the health room upon arriving at school.

3. Medication must be dispensed from the original container, labeled with patient's name, name of medication, strength, dosage schedule, and date prescribed. Only those doses required at school should be brought.

4. It is the student's responsibility to come to the health room for his/her medication.
5. Inhalers: Secondary students, upon written parental request, may carry and be responsible for their own inhalers.6. All medication not picked up by the last day of school will be discarded.
